If your roof is getting older, you have probably already looked up what a replacement costs. It is not a small number, and it tends to arrive sooner than people plan for.
Treating an aging roof is the other option some homeowners have. Here is how the two compare on cost, using market averages, and why the averages are only the beginning of the decision.
The averages
Across the market, replacing an asphalt shingle roof averages about $7 per square foot. Treating one averages about $1.50 per square foot.
On a 3,000 square foot roof, that works out to:
| Option | Market average | On a 3,000 sq ft roof |
|---|---|---|
| Replace | about $7 per sq ft | about $21,000 |
| Treat | about $1.50 per sq ft | about $4,500 |
That gap is why so many people ask about treatment before they sign for a new roof. It is also why it is worth being careful with these numbers.
Why an average is not a quote
An average describes a market. It does not describe your roof.
Your roof’s size, pitch, condition and how far along the shingles are all change what it needs. That is why we never put a number on anyone’s roof before seeing it. Your price follows the free evaluation, once the roof has been looked at in person and scored.
If anyone gives you a firm price for treating your roof without looking at it, ask what they based it on.

Treatment only makes sense on a sound roof
The cost comparison only applies when treatment is actually an option. That depends on the roof, not the budget.
Treatment is for aging asphalt shingle roofs that are still structurally sound. The signs that point that way are granule loss, fading, brittleness and minor curling at the shingle edges.
It is not an option when the roof is failing. Widespread leaks, missing or broken shingles, deteriorated decking or sagging mean the roof needs a roofing contractor. In that situation the cheaper option is not cheaper at all, because it does not fix the problem. Superior Roof Coatings does not do repair or replacement, and we will tell you plainly if that is what your roof needs.
Our guide to telling rejuvenation from replacement goes deeper on where that line sits.
What the treatment price buys
GoNano Structural Roof Rejuvenation works within the shingle. It is not a surface coating, sealer or paint film. The aim is to extend the life of a qualifying roof instead of tearing it off.
Every treatment also carries a written warranty issued by GoNano, running 3 to 20 years depending on the NuRoof system applied and the roof’s Roof Health Score. We explain how that works, system by system, in the GoNano warranty explained.
Any figure about how many years treatment adds to a roof is GoNano’s own published claim about its technology, not a guarantee from us. You can read what GoNano reports on our Why GoNano page.
A sensible order of steps
- Check the roof from the ground. Granules in the gutters, faded patches, curling edges. Do not walk the roof.
- Rule out the failing roof. If it leaks, has missing shingles or sags, call a roofing contractor first.
- Book a free evaluation if what you see is aging, not failure. It is free and carries no obligation.
- Compare real numbers. With the evaluation done, you are comparing your actual price against replacement, not two averages.
