People here tend to blame the roof on storms. A hail line comes through Bradley County, and the next month everybody is up on a ladder.

Storms are worth checking after. But the thing that actually ages most roofs in this part of Tennessee is quieter than that, and it happens every single day between March and October.

The long summer does the real work

An asphalt shingle stays flexible because of oils inside the material. Heat and ultraviolet light drive those oils out. That is the aging process, more or less in full.

The Tennessee Valley gives shingles a long run at it. Our summers are hot, they are humid, and they go on. A roof surface in direct July sun here runs far hotter than the air temperature, and it sits at that temperature for hours at a stretch, day after day, for months.

Nothing about that is dramatic. There is no event to point at. The shingle just gets a little stiffer each season, and one year you notice the granules coming off and wonder when that started.

It started years ago. You are seeing the accumulation.

Why the back of your house looks older

Walk around your house in the morning and look at each slope separately.

The slopes facing south and west are the ones taking afternoon sun, which in summer is both the longest and the harshest part of the day. Those slopes lose oils faster. They fade first, they shed granules first, and they crack first.

North facing slopes get the opposite problem. Less direct sun means they stay damp longer after rain, which in our humidity is exactly what algae wants. Those dark streaks running down a north slope are usually algae, not shingle damage, and they are a cosmetic issue rather than a structural one.

It is common to look at a roof where the front is holding up well and the back is clearly further along. Same roof, same age, same installer. Different amount of sun.

Spring storms, and what hail really does

Storm season brings wind and hail through the valley, and both matter, but not in the way people usually assume.

Hail on a healthy shingle often does nothing lasting. The asphalt is flexible, it absorbs the impact, and the granule layer takes the abrasion. Hail on a shingle that has already dried out and stiffened is a different event, because brittle material fractures instead of flexing.

This is the part worth sitting with. The same hailstorm produces different outcomes on two roofs of the same age, and the variable is how much life the shingle had left when the storm arrived. Storm damage is often aging damage that a storm revealed.

Wind works similarly. A flexible shingle that is well sealed resists lifting. A stiff one, with weakened seal strips, gives the wind an edge to get under.

Winter here is not cold, it is indecisive

A hard northern winter is in some ways easier on a roof than ours. Sustained cold is stable.

What we get instead is a season that crosses the freezing point over and over. A wet afternoon in the forties, a night in the twenties, back above freezing by lunch. Water works into small cracks, freezes, expands, thaws, and repeats.

On a shingle that is still flexible, this is survivable. On a shingle that has already stiffened through years of summer, each cycle works on cracks that are already there.

Which is why the two halves of the year compound. Summer creates the brittleness. Winter exploits it.

The variable nobody thinks about

Attic ventilation.

A poorly ventilated attic in a Tennessee summer becomes an oven, and it heats the shingles from underneath while the sun heats them from above. The shingle cooks from both sides. That single factor can put a roof years ahead of its age.

You can sometimes see it from the ground. Roofs on houses with weak ventilation tend to age unevenly and faster than neighbors of the same vintage. If your roof looks noticeably worse than the identical house two doors down, ventilation is worth ruling out.

It is also worth mentioning that we do not do ventilation work. That is a roofing contractor’s job. But it is the kind of thing that explains what we are looking at, and it is worth knowing if you are planning ahead.

What to do with all of this

Two moments in the year are worth a look. Spring, after storm season has finished, so you know what the year did. Fall, before winter, so anything you are going to act on gets handled before the freeze thaw cycles start.

What you are looking for is not damage exactly. It is stiffness. Granules in the gutters, fading, edges beginning to curl, and the difference between the south slope and the north one.

Those things tell you where the roof is in its life. And knowing that while there is still flexibility left in the shingle is what keeps your options open, because roof life extension only works on a shingle that still has something to protect.
